‘MALAIKA'

‘More than you imagined….' That is what Silver Stage Musical Series, the musical theatre brand of Sterling Quality Entertainment Company Ltd. aims to bring you this November at the Kenya National Theatre. From the 4 th to the 13 th of November, we recreate the magic of yesteryear in our second original Kenyan musical, ‘Malaika'.

Beautiful and headstrong, Malaika comes of age in the post-colonial disco era, when Saturday Night Fever was more than just a movie—it was a guiding principle. Like most teenagers, she seeks to define her identity and find out who she really is…which translates into conflict with her parents. However, she soon discovers that there's more to life than the never-ending party and the handsome guitarist at the local club. Living in an extremely volatile political climate soon has its consequences, and no one is left unscathed….

‘Malaika' will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will make you get up and twist away to the tunes that you either fondly remember as ‘Zilizopendwa' or that you not-so-fondly remember as that awful music your parents forced on you but somehow sounds truly amazing here when backed by a live band…but most of all, ‘Malaika' will entertain while raising your social consciousness about the realities that existed (and continue to exist) in our beloved country.

This extraordinary musical was written by Nancy Day and Chao Mkamzee Mwatela, both of whom have long been involved in the Kenyan musical theatre scene. As the one-time head of the music department at the renowned St. Mary's School, Nairobi , Nancy Day was responsible for producing such classics as ‘Cinderella' and ‘Handsome and the Hag'. Together with the artistic and choreography director, Chimi Chweya, they have been instrumental in creating the magic behind the Silver Stage Musicals productions ‘Sarafina!' , ‘LWANDA: Man of Stone' , and ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat ®' .

‘Malaika' also features the talents of Rebecca Muikia, Mugambi Nthiga, Makutano Junction's Charles Ouda and Maqbul Mohammed, and Meshack Warambo, who feature in an extremely talented cast of 30.

You can get your tickets to this unforgettable theatrical experience at all Dormans and Woolworths outlets, the Kenya National Theatre box office, through dial-a-ticket on 020-3872919 and 0724-239313, or by emailing sales@sterlingq.com .
